Hampi, mid-western India

Hampi was an imperial capitol city around the 3rd century until the reining monarch pissed somebody off and Hampi was attack and supposedly razed to the ground. Many, many square miles of area still have buildings and parts of building standing in various states of repair. It is a UNESCO heritage site so there is a problem with the locals using structures for generations, (as goat pens, bike parking, bus stops, homes etc.) that are thousands of years old, while UNESCO is trying to preserve them. They still worship in many of the temples and the whole area is vegetarian and anti- liquor, so it's been a dry and meatless several days. Fortunately, they make GREAT vegetarian.
